Jude the Obscure – A Perfect English Rose

IMG_3654

I don’t include many roses in planting plans these days as most clients seek low-water or drought tolerant plants – and rightly so. For those who cannot live without roses, I suggest they choose a few they love, place them close to the house or an outdoor seating area or path where the beauty and fragrance can really be savored.

This blooms in this picture were recently cut from my own all-time favorite rose named “Jude the Obscure.” It was bred by David Austin in 1995. I have moved twice and each time have planted this rose from bare root. It is amazingly hardy, moderately low water once established and pest free. It is also a prolific, repeat bloomer and is visually stunning with a strong, delicious fruity fragrance with hints of lemon, myrrh and peach.

If possible, try watering higher water “must have” plants with grey water – if you don’t have a system in place simply collect some water each time you rinse dishes or vegetables in the kitchen sink.  In my house, we collect buckets of shower water as it is heating up and deploy this on select plants in our yard. It’s basic, but it works.
